Hollywood Tattoo Studio History
This studio came up in the late â70s as a direct challenge to Captain Jim Malonsonâs spot. Colonel Bill Todd and Bob Shaw werenât looking to just set up shopâthey were looking to compete, to carve out their own piece of the scene in a city that was already stacked with heavy hitters. And they did just that. This was a no-bullshit kind of shop, a real-deal tattoo joint where legends walked in and out of the door every day. Bob Roberts, Phil Simms, Mark Reynoldsâyou name it, they worked there.
By the time the â80s and â90s rolled around, the shop was in the hands of Joanna Yun, Pinky Yunâs granddaughter. She held it down, keeping the place raw and real, with artists like Jay MOK coming through. The shopâs flash tells its own storyâmost of it on 15″ x 20″ Crescent Board, some sheets signed, some not. But if you know, you know.
This is the history of Hollywood Tattoo Studio, pulled straight from its walls, packed up, and saved. This shop wasnât just another name in the gameâit was a cornerstone of L.A. tattooing, built to go toe-to-toe with the best and standing tall for decades.
