Hollywood Tattoo Studio History

This studio came up in the late ‘70s as a direct challenge to Captain Jim Malonson’s spot. Colonel Bill Todd and Bob Shaw weren’t looking to just set up shop—they were looking to compete, to carve out their own piece of the scene in a city that was already stacked with heavy hitters. And they did just that. This was a no-bullshit kind of shop, a real-deal tattoo joint where legends walked in and out of the door every day. Bob Roberts, Phil Simms, Mark Reynolds—you name it, they worked there.

By the time the ‘80s and ‘90s rolled around, the shop was in the hands of Joanna Yun, Pinky Yun’s granddaughter. She held it down, keeping the place raw and real, with artists like Jay MOK coming through. The shop’s flash tells its own story—most of it on 15″ x 20″ Crescent Board, some sheets signed, some not. But if you know, you know.

This is the history of Hollywood Tattoo Studio, pulled straight from its walls, packed up, and saved. This shop wasn’t just another name in the game—it was a cornerstone of L.A. tattooing, built to go toe-to-toe with the best and standing tall for decades.
