Carl Joseph Brodtmann was a Swiss draftsman, graphic artist, lithographer, publicist and bookseller. He was born in Überlingen and moved from Lindau to Zurich in 1817, where he founded his own lithographic workshop in 1820. In 1830 he founded a lithographic institute in Schaffhausen with an attached book and art shop. He is best known for his lithographs in the zoological works of Heinrich Rudolf Schinz. Brodtmann’s works are characterized by scientific accuracy and high aesthetic standards. Brodtmann died in Basel in 1862
